When Is the Best Time to Visit a Working Ranch in Alberta?
The ranch is open from May 1 through October 31. Each part of that window is different, and the right time to visit depends on what you want to see and do. Here is an honest account of what each season offers.
May and June: the ranch waking up
May is when the ranch comes back to life after the quiet of calving and early spring. The calves are out in the pasture, the grass is coming up, and the late May cattle drive moves the herd to the summer range. Guests who visit in late May and time it right can join the drive.
June is a good month for riding. The canyon trail is usually in good condition by mid-June, the days are long, and the foothills are green in a way they will not be again until the following spring. The kitchen garden is not producing yet, but the kitchen is cooking well regardless.
July and August: the long light of summer
July and August are the busiest months. The days are long, the garden is producing, and the ranch is running at full pace. Trail rides go out twice a day through August. The light in the canyon at 6:00 in the morning and again at 18:00 in the evening is the best of the year.
This is also the warmest period, with afternoon temperatures sometimes reaching 30 degrees Celsius in the valley. Mornings and evenings are cool. The creek in the canyon runs clear and cold all summer and is worth walking to on a warm afternoon.
September and October: the quieter end of the season
September is a quieter month. The garden is winding down, the days are shortening, and the ranch has a different pace. The light is lower and warmer, the canyon walls catch it differently, and the cottonwoods in the creek bottom start to turn yellow in the last week of the month.
The October cattle drive, moving the herd back to the winter pasture, is the last major event of the season. The ranch closes after October 31. Guests who want the drive experience and prefer cooler weather and smaller crowds should aim for early October.
